| To Whom It May Concern: In 2004, 16.7 million people reported they were heavy drinkers. Drug overdoses have been the fourth leading cause of death in the south bay since 2002 and forty percent of 18-24 year olds reported binge drinking in the past month. Alcohol affects women differently than men. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are much more of a health risk for women, causing them to be at a greater risk for developing alcohol-related problems such as cirrhosis, heart disease, and cancer. Now more than ever it is crucial for
women to have a safe and sober environment to help recover from alcoholism
and drug addiction and learn how to live a sober life. Since 1981, The
Serenity House, a women’s structured transitional sober-living
home in the South Bay, has strived to create such an environment. We
achieve this by welcoming women who have a strong desire to achieve
sobriety, encouraging and helping them to return to work and school,
requiring a regular schedule of 12 step meetings and active work with
a sponsor and the twelve steps. To help acclimate to their new sober
life, each resident is required to do a few simple things including
daily household chores as well as accountability for their whereabouts.
This helps teach respect and responsibility, rebuilding self-esteem
and self-respect that have been lost due to years of alcoholism. $625: could provide a resident bed for
